Terry Johnson Artist

Real Art Has A Soul
There are so many forms true art can take but it is always shaped by the presence of a soul. A signature something that can be expressed through a riff, a melody, a pen, paint brush, or even a Apple pen.
The medium may change, the genre may change, the narrative may change but there is this signature something that says, I am human, I have lived, I have laughed, I have cried, I have a soul.
It is my hope, my dream, my commitment to share my soul through art. I am Terry Johnson, I am a human, an artist, and I have a soul.
Let's start with one of my favorite series, I call "The Legends". I am sure I don't need to tell you why.
THE LEGENDS
I am not sure where I would be today, or if I would even be here if it had not been for music. We didn't have money, the neighborhood was not that great, there was tension and troubles, but then there was music.

Every Story Has A Beginning
I was 12, one of my friends from school was truly what you would call gifted. I saw what he was doing and that was it for me. I wanted to create art. My humble beginnings ... my first teacher were comics and my medium was line paper and a number 2 pencil. That's what we could afford. I was always drawing and along the way, people started to notice and though my family didn't get it ... I was fortunate enought to come across a few adults who did. A little encouragement, a little inspiration, and a lot of determination.

Never Stopped
In my 30's, I started The College for Creative Studies, a private art school in Detroit. It took some work to create a portfolio that would allow me successfully enter the school and began my formal education. But as life would have it, some of the most profound experiences were not from a formal education but from life whispering don't stop ... never stop.
Commissions
When I married my wife 26 years ago, I painted a picture of her mother who has died the year we met. It was a gift to her family, the teary eyes and gratitude was an omen. I have had the opportunity to help many families memorialize a love one and the response always touches me, the tears and words of gratitude. Periodically, I will take on such a commission as way of staying connected to the reality that life is short and it is a gift. Make sure you unwrap yours!
